Session 1 A. Basic Skills for African Violet Growers

Whether you are learning basics of African violet culture and care for the first time or ‘getting back to the basics, veteran AV grower Linda Abplanalp will help you achieve the results you desire from your plants. Linda has long been recognized as an expert grower by AVSA and also by MAAVS, as well as the affiliate clubs in the greater Raleigh area. Session 2 A. French Beaded African Violet MakeandTake

Friday, April 16, 2010 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Laurene Jones, Annandale, VA

Limited to 15 participants. $20.00 fee collected at convention registration desk upon arrival. Master Judge and AVSA Judges’ School Teacher, Laurene Jones will share another of her many gifts – making French beaded flowers. In this exciting handson workshop, participants will makeandtake a beaded African violet blossom of their very own. Crafters will be given a choice of bead size. The most exquisite flowers are done with size 15 (not what you find in the craft store). Those who have trouble seeing smaller details or aren’t adept with a magnifier, may use size 11 beads. Make your reservations early for this marvelous session with a Master Judge who is also a Master Crafter.

Session 3 A. Handson African Violet Hybridization

Friday, April 16, 2010 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Dave Rollins, Cedar Creek, Kentucky

Limited to 25 participants. $20.00 fee collected at convention registration desk upon arrival. Popular Kentucky series African violet hybridizer David Rollins will guide participants stepbystep through the process of hybridization. Participants will be able to select two parent plants at the workshop, hybridize them on site, and take them home. Make your debut as a hybridizer or just learn more about how it is done!

Session 4 A. A Virtual Tour of Tanzania – Land of the Species Violets

President of Narrow Gate Trekking, Kerry is a seasoned outdoorsman and Africa traveler. He is a graduate of the North Carolina Outward Bound School and a retired Army officer. His 28 years in the military included tours of duty in Austria, Ethiopia, Rwanda, and Liberia. In addition, Kerry has travelled extensively in Southern Africa, including driving support to several longdistance treks across the Namib and Kalahari deserts. For this exciting visual presentation, Kerry will take us on a trek through Tanzania and the surrounding countryside – home of the Saintpaulia species. It’s the next best thing to being there and YOU can have a front row seat.

Session 1 B. Chimera Dreams – African Violets in Hong Kong

Anyone who has seen even one of Stanley Ko’s magnificent chimera African violet hybrids will know what a rare and exciting presentation this promises to be. Stanley will discuss how he became involved with African violets, and his 25year career as a grower and hybridizer (the first hybridizer in Hong Kong!). He will tell us about growing conditions in Hong Kong, hybridizing chimeras, tips for hybridizing success, and the clubs and shows available to Hong Kong growers. This will be a rare glimpse into growing African violets half a world away – truly a mustsee program by one of the nicest fellows you’ll ever meet!

Session 2 B. Good Things Come in Small Packages – Streptocarpus

Don’t have room to grow streps? This program will show you the latest efforts of Dale Martens and others to reduce Streptocarpus leaf size through selective breeding. Dale will also briefly discuss hybridizing African violets with “green genes” in order to get longer lasting blooms. You know she always brings plant material to give away!

Session 3 B. Advanced Judging Skills – Picking Up the Pieces

Friday, April 16, 2010 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. Shows and Judges Committee Members Panel Chair: Paul Kroll, East Aurora, NY

Occasionally, we need to step back and observe what has become habit in how we judge certain aspects of shows. This presentation will attempt to do just that, with concentration on the judging of Educational and Membership Displays as well as ways to accomplish final judging of the BestinShow awards for each of the horticultural sections. This presentation is open to all convention attendees, not only judges. We will share some stories, have a few laughs, and learn some fresh techniques. Audience participation expected, welcomed, and anticipated!

Ever wondered if you might be able to make your hobby pay for itself while sharing the joy of African violets with others? Becoming an African violet vendor can be both fun and profitable if you begin the adventure with open eyes and realistic expectations. Tea Gallela of Teaz Violets will share the basics of selling on eBay and in person at club meetings and shows, how to pack African violets safely for transport and shipping, and basic tips for keeping customers happy and fostering customer loyalty. Also, she will share how to run your business without allowing it to run you. Even if you never plan on becoming a vendor yourself, this program will help you understand what vendors go through in order to provide us with the plants we love!
